Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Manufacturing Engineer  to join the Electrical Wiring Systems Team in West Hartford, CT. This role will develop, implement, transfer and maintain manufacturing processes required to meet the needs of the operation for both existing and new products. Utilizes and supports individual, team and quality/process improvement efforts. Within Advanced Manufacturing, functions as a manufacturing process expert, industrialization project manager and key member of assigned New Product Development Teams and may also function as overall project manager for specific projects when appropriate. Provides new product cost estimates to the NPD design team. Advocates for clearly documented product designs capable of robust/cost effective/repeatable manufacture (DFM, DFA) and assures manufacturing processes and supply chain meets requirements for process capability, safety, customer service, reliability and cost.

Qualifications

Education:  Bachelors Degree in Mechanical/Manufacturing or Electrical Engineering.
 
Experience: 8 plus years experience in a hands on, shop floor oriented manufacturing engineering capacity.

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Mechanical, Electrical, Safety, Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering Skills sets, including communication, verbal send/receive and written and mechanical drafting.

  • Thorough understanding of electro-mechanical assembly methods including operator mistake proofing, test and verification practices.  Well versed in sheet metal fabrication, punching, stamping, forming and associated tooling as well as secondary metal finishing processes, thermoplastic injection molding, extruding, mold specification and procurement. Casting and metal extrusion processes a plus.

  • Position requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and ability to effectively handle multiple priorities. Independent judgment is required to plan, prioritize, organize and accomplish a diversified work load.  Is self motivated and enthusiastically executes responsibilities with high energy and without extensive external direction.

  • Strong computer skills, specifically 3-D CAD, MRP, word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, e-mail and meeting/project management software.  Ability to use internet and web based resources efficiently and effectively.

  • Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team based environment promoting an environment that encourages cohesiveness, fosters trust and open communication with team, peers and all business partners.

  • Must possess strong analytical skills and the ability to identify trends and establish proactive corrective actions.  Must be able to apply principles of logical and scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to maintain focus, extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information.

  • Must possess excellent project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage to a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a number of projects at various stages of work.

 

Position Attributes

Main Job Duties:

  • Design, improve, maintain and implement processes (equipment, machines, fixtures, etc.) to meet operational needs through monitoring, feedback from manufacturing leaders, supervisors, maintenance activities, operators and personal observation. Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance schedules for all processes.
  • Develop supply chain and manufacturing process plans which meet all manufacturing requirements for safety, ergonomics, process capability, service, quality and cost.  Calculate cost impact on products. Present process concept proposals and implement approved processes on schedule and within budget. Promote lean manufacturing, participate in and/or lead process improvement initiatives, identify improvement opportunities for safety, cost, ergonomics, quality and process capability improvements.
  • Monitor and assure assigned processes are and continue to be compliant with all safety, environmental and regulatory requirements.  Audit both administrative and engineering controls. Communicate findings, take corrective action and design/implement engineered solutions when appropriate to maintain effective compliance.
  • Monitor quality of production and assure assigned processes are capable of producing at or above required quality levels.  Perform root cause analyses, take corrective actions and design/implement engineered solutions when appropriate to maintain effective compliance.
  • Develop and document manufacturing methods. Plan and establish sequence of operations to fabricate and assemble parts or products so as to promote efficient utilization. Draft and design layout of equipment, materials, and workspace to illustrate maximum efficiency. Assure all documentation is archived and maintained in accordance with standard practice.  Train maintenance and operating associates on new and revised process procedures.  Assure production rates are achievable and routinely repeatable by capable operators.
  • Resolve emergent engineering related production barriers. Provide technical assistance to maintenance and operations as necessary to meet the needs of the business. Does what is required to safely get processes back on line with minimum loss to the business.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to product design engineering, manufacturing engineering and production team members on issues related to product manufacturability.  Within Advanced Manufacturing, may provide leadership for a new product development project, product line transfer, new process acquisition/implementation or process improvement.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.
