Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Lab Technician I/II to join the Legrand/Pass & Seymour Team in Concord, NC. The individual in this role will facilitate, perform, and document electrical and mechanical testing as needed to support Sustaining Engineering efforts to maintain and/or obtain agency certifications or listings. The Lab Technician role will also facilitate, perform, and document tests as needed to verify and quantify electrical and mechanical performance characteristics of prototype designs, new and existing products, and competitive products. The Lab Technician will also serve as an interface with UL and other compliance agencies, and assist with benchmarking efforts of competitive products through procurement, documentation, and analysis of complete assemblies and discrete components.

Qualifications

Required Skills:

  • Associate degree with 3+ years' experience in an electrical/mechanical testing environment as follows:
    • interpreting and following mechanical drawings, electrical schematics and test standards.
    • documenting results on tests performed
    • evaluating failed test results to resolution
    • utilizing an oscilloscope

OR

  • High School Diploma with 7+ years' experience in an electrical/mechanical testing environment as follows:
    • interpreting and following mechanical drawings, electrical schematics and test standards.
    • documenting results on tests performed
    • evaluating failed test results to resolution
    • utilizing an oscilloscope

Preferred Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Pay close attention to detail
  • Knowledge of the design concepts and components used in single and three phase low voltage AC distribution systems (circuit breakers, switches, connectors, etc) and simple electronic circuits.
  • Able to troubleshoot and correct pneumatic, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical issues with test equipment.
  • Able to properly and accurately use a variety of measuring instruments (i.e. voltmeters, calipers, micrometers, comparator, etc), power tools (drill press, band saw, etc), and hand tools (wrenches, solder iron, etc).
  • Experience with SolidWorks or AutoCad preferred.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills

Main Interface: Internal – Engineering and operation personnel; External – Regulatory agency personnel, test equipment suppliers, test equipment repair and calibration service providers

 
Budget: Provide input to department budget for operating and capital costs

 

Main Job Duties:

  • Conduct and document electrical and mechanical agency certification testing. Cultivate and maintain a professional relationship with agency engineers and inspectors during certification investigations.
  • Conduct developmental testing of existing and new product designs for both internal and external customers. Maintain continuous communications with engineering design staff regarding test progress and results. Provide recommendations to engineering design staff for design improvements based upon testing observations.
  • Utilization, familiarization and maintenance of agency (UL, CSA, Fed Spec., IEC, etc.) publications and requirements.
  • Develop, maintain, update, and improve lab testing methods and procedures as required.
  • Responsible, directly and indirectly, for the design, construction, and commissioning of purpose built lab equipment and fixtures.
  • Responsible, directly and indirectly, for the maintenance, repair, and certification of all lab equipment.
  • Assist engineering design staff with developing design concepts and execution of prototypes.
  • Perform other similar and related duties as directed by supervisor.
