Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Director, Environmental Management, Health and Safety to join the Legrand North & Central America Team in West Hartford, CT.

The environmental health and safety (EHS) director assists the VP of Energy Efficiency, Sustainability and Public Policy, in consultation with leadership from Human Resources and Operational Excellence, in developing the company’s EHS goals and strategy and ensures that the health, safety, and environmental impact policies of the company are being successfully implemented.  This is a managerial position largely carried out in an office environment, though the EHS Director shall regularly tour facilities to personally inspect operations and communicate with different departments.   The scope of responsibility extends to management teams and employees in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America and operations units Greater China.

 

Beyond compliance, the EHS Director develops and implements programs and processes that support Legrand’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) priorities related to the environment, health and safety, and the achievement of related, multi-year goals. 

Minimum qualifications for an EHS director position are a bachelor's degree in environmental health and safety management or related field and at least ten years of on-the-job experience in implementing environmental, health and safety programs. The position requires strong managerial, communication, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work in both a team and independently.  The successful applicant will also have strong program management skills and experience, and will have demonstrated the ability to guide, educate and influence colleagues to adopt the necessary processes and behaviors that are hallmarks of a deep culture of environmental management, health and safety.  The candidate must also be able to handle high-stress emergency situations. Relevant OSHA and ISO certifications are strongly preferred.

Qualifications

Education/Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in EHS, Engineering, Industrial Management or related field
  • Minimum of 10 years related experience;
  • International Experience in manufacturing environment preferred
  • Experience in behavior based safety programs and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus
  • Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations including OSHA, Worker Compensation, and L & I, DOT, and EPA

Position Attributes

Responsibilities:

  • The EHS Director has two primary areas of responsibility commensurate with his/her expertise in, and general oversight and coordination of all EHS matters: 1) effective maintenance of the company’s environmental management system and 2) the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, which may include the achievement of certification to US or international health and safety standards.

General:

  • In concert with the VP, of Energy Efficiency, Sustainability and Public Policy, provide strategic leadership and guidance to direct, engage and apply people, data, and budgetary resources to achieve an integrated and synergistic approach to environmental management, health and safety across the organization. 
  • Provide technical expertise, strategic leadership, and support for all of Legrand’s various facilities, departments, (including all acquisitions) on regulatory compliance issues in Safety and Environmental Health.
  • Act as the principal a liaison between executive staff, plant and warehouse management and human resources on matters relating to safety and health.
  • Develop and evaluate Environmental, Health and Safety plans and standards, assess the feasibility of proposed options, and coordinate efforts to ensure successful program implementation.
  • Manage the development and implementation of Environmental, Health and Safety metrics and provide direction and the necessary training for plant personnel to effectively report results.
  • Provide coaching and training/development for team members to build our internal capabilities to ensure Environmental, Health and Safety program compliance.
  • Chair various internal organizational teams/committees as needed to drive effective implementation of Legrand’s environmental management, health and safety mission, policies and respective goals and objectives.
  • Serve as an agent of the company and representative/liaison to a variety of external entities pertinent to the duties of the position, including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Customers, Suppliers, industry related groups, and various nonprofit, educational, government, and community entities.
  • Stay current and continuously improve the program by leveraging continuous learning, staying abreast of relevant technologies and regulations, and identifying industry best practices through industry associations, vendor contacts, formal seminars, workshops, and peer group companies.
  • Work with worldwide plant personnel to ensure Environmental, Health and Safety regulatory compliance and collaborate with Sustainability staff and cross-company teams to ensure we meet our corporate sustainability goals.
  • Provide input to the relevant associates with responsibility for the acquisition of new businesses.
  • Complete other duties and projects as assigned

Environmental management

  • Create and maintain program management systems to ensure that eligible Legrand sites achieve and maintain ISO-14001 certification.
  • Lead corporate EMS review sessions and provide regular oversight and guidance to site level EMS programs
  • Conduct the annual review of the site level submission of environmental indicators to the Legrand Group
  • Conduct internal audits and provide/coordinate the training of other qualified personnel to conduct audits
  • Provide timely follow-up and ensure corrective actions to any identified non-conformities or evidence of non-compliance with internal and external requirements.
  • Contribute to the development of Legrand environmental policies, corporate objectives and related strategies and ensure all are reflected in the corporate and site level Environmental Management System.
  • Assist site personnel with short and long term environmental compliance planning and related process or programs
  • Monitor the improvement of environmental compliance and management initiatives; identify opportunities for continuous improvement

Health and Safety

  • Plan, develop and implement safety key concepts to provide the road map to zero injuries and world class performance in all functions and services of health and safety for all distribution centers and all the manufacturing locations in the US, Mexico, India, and China.
  • Direct and control the safety and health function for organization to reduce safety rates, financial losses, and eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses.
  • Administer and monitor written, programs, policies, procedures, and trainings to meet or exceed government regulations, industry standards, and insurance companies’ requirements to enhance safety performance
  • Collaborate with peers in the organization to provide global support to ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety, environmental, and workers compensation regulations while focusing on the improvement of key performance indicators.
  • Responsible for internal audits for Safety & Health Programs
  • Ensure regular conduct of safety meetings at each location in US and globally if applicable, participating virtually or personally as schedules dictate.
  • Direct inspection of organization’s facilities to detect existing or potential accident hazards and determine corrective or preventive measures.
  • Lead the investigation of accidents and reviews material and evidence prepared for organizations use in preventing future incidents, hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
  • Work with the global and domestic EHS/HR Managers and Global Operations Managers, to conduct and/or participate in incident investigations, complete investigation reports and implement remedial actions
  • Disseminate incident/accident related information and monitor incident/accident investigations, reports and verify corrective action is completed in a timely matter
  • Oversee the reporting mechanisms for all the global injuries, workers’ compensation, serious incidents and environmental releases ensuring compatibility with company objectives.
  • Ensure field location compliance with international, federal, state and local law enforcement regulatory agency.
  • Understand the chemicals and any/all potential safety and environmental hazards used/present at all Legrand sites, take steps to reduce the use of problematic chemicals and to mitigate any potential safety and environmental health hazards.
