Position Description

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join the Electrical Wiring Systems Pass & Seymour Team in Concord, NC. The Sr. Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design, development, and improvement of new and existing products and manufacturing processes used to make plastic electrical components. These activities must support the company's goals of increasing market share and profitability through creativity and innovation. 

 
 

What Will You Do? 

  • Develops manufacturing process plans which meet all manufacturing requirements for safety, ergonomics, process capability, quality, and cost. Presents process concept proposals and implements approved processes on schedule and within budget. Identifies improvement opportunities for safety, cost, ergonomics, quality, and process capability improvements. 

  • Monitors production quality and assures assigned processes can produce at or above required quality levels. Perform root cause analyses, takes corrective action, and designs/implements engineered solutions when appropriate to maintain effective compliance. 

  • Designs, improves, maintains and implements processes (equipment, machines, fixtures, etc.) to meet operational needs through monitoring, feedback from manufacturing leaders, supervisors, maintenance activities, operators, and personal observation. Establishes and maintains effective preventive maintenance schedules for all processes. 

  • Produce and update necessary documentation to support production including engineering drawings and specifications, bills of materials, and quality requirements and testing. 

  • Manage projects to rapid and effective completion including spanning departmental gaps. 

  • Work with the Marketing Product Line Manager to develop the product specification. Gain consensus on design with marketing and manufacturing. Determine the appropriate codes and standards, testing requirements, end user preferences and trends, and competitive product analysis. 

  • Create sketches, 3D files and prototype designs to express all the different options that are used to satisfy the product requirements. Evaluate these concepts to choose the best design based on customer requirements. Create final 3D models, assemblies, and drawings using Pro-Engineer and other CAD software to refine, develop and finalize the design. 

  • Refine and complete product design through modeling, prototyping, testing, analysis, piloting, and inspection of processes and first articles. Work closely with Advanced Manufacturing, Tool Shops and Manufacturing to procure prototype and production product components. 

  • Performs other similar and related duties as required. 

Qualifications

Education: 

  • Minimum BS Mechanical Engineering. Master's Degree desirable. Specific experience may serve to offset education.

 

Experience: 

  • 5 - 10 years manufacturing experience that has obtained specialized/expert experience that complements a broad base. 

  • Plastic Extrusion experience and tool and die experience preferred 

 
 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: 

  • Must have a broad understanding of Engineering principles, materials, and manufacturing processes. Must demonstrate creativity in the development of new product design concepts. 

  • Must possess excellent project management skills, including demonstrated ability to develop and manage a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines and control a number of projects at various stages of work. 

  • Strong computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, e-mail, and meeting management software. Ability to use internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively. Must be proficient with engineering design and engineering project management software. 

  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, close attention to detail and be able to effectively handle multiple priorities. 

  • Must have excellent verbal and written communications skills and be able to communicate effectively across all levels of the organization. Must be an effective listener, able to maintain focus, extract necessary information and validate understanding of the information. 

 
 

Position Attributes: 

  • CAD: Has the ability to produce CAD solid models and 2-D drawings. Can direct and assign project authority to other junior engineers and designers. 

  • Documentation: Produce ECN with BOM and Drawings to support existing and new design line expansions. 

  • Manufacturing Process: Suggest machine improvements to aid in product manufacturability and repeatability. Has the ability to lead these projects from start to end which includes machine type suggestions. 

  • Manufacturing Process: Suggest assembly methods modifications to aid in obtaining product process improvement by product design improvement. Has the ability to lead these projects from start to end. 

  • Quality Systems: Design quality Check gages and supervise and approve the building and implementation into the manufacturing process. 

  • Product Testing: Devises and performs specialized lab mechanical tests. Directs lab technicians on exactly what and how to set up tests. 

  • Problem Solving: Innovates highly complex technical solutions for existing or new product designs. Provides guidance to junior engineers and designers. 

  • Problem Solving: Is the technical leader in complex product complaint resolution. Is considered the internal expert in defining the safety or non-safety 

  • Self-Direction: Priorities are set by managers. Manages their own workload and coordinates with others. Exhibits excellent project reporting skills on highly complex projects that cut across boundaries. 

  • Self-Direction: Drives new designs through the development system. Is responsible for the schedule progress of the project. 

  • Project Leadership: Serves as lead presenter at project meetings. Serves as Project Driver. 

  • Technical Leadership: Serves as lead Presenter at Project Meetings. Serves as Project Driver. 

  • Technical Leadership:  Serve as principal technical resource for new product introductions.
