Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Engineer III - Product Development to join the Lighting Sector Focal Point Team in Chicago, IL. This is an exciting opportunity to be a key part of the Focal Point’s engineering team, developing and supporting world-class luminaire designs.  This position will take development projects from concept through functional development and the stage-gate process.  There will be a high level of collaboration with manufacturing on prototype and pilot builds prior to product launch along with guiding the projects through optical, safety and reliability testing.  Project management skills will be honed on large scale projects, including, providing presentations to the leadership team at each key milestone.  This position reports to the Engineering Leader.

 

What Will You Do?

  • Lead development projects utilizing a multi-disciplinary team to bring new or improved products to market.
  • Apply creative thinking and analysis to develop unique and innovative concepts that meet or exceed customer requirements and product targets.
  • Analyze risks and root out issues early in the design process, using various internal Focal Point resources, as needed.
  • Work closely with product management on product requirements and assure we have right sized product scope and timing to meet the needs of our customers.
  • Establishing timeline commitments and to coordinate communication updates to all areas of the business.
  • Ownership of complete project deliverables, including design documentation, production documentation, sales tools, cost model, etc.
  • Peer review of designs to assist teammates and ensure best practices are followed and lessons learned are incorporated.
  • Simultaneously support multiple projects in various phases of development.

Qualifications

Required Skills

 

Experience:

  • 5-10 years of professional engineering work experience, preferably in product development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program.
  • Experience with casted and injection molded part design and electromechanical assembly design.
  • Lighting industry, downlighting, and optics design experience, preferred but not required.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and experience with DFM.
  • 3D CAD software expertise, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and apply GD&T.
  • Demonstrated success in ensuring cost reduction targets are achieved as outlined in the project scope.
  • Demonstrated success working in cross-functional teams through projects or organizations.
