EHS Director

At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for an Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Director to join the LNA Corporate Team. This is a remote position. The EHS Director in consultation leadership with Human Resources, Operations, and other company executives, deploys company’s EHS strategies, policies, and procedures. Ensuring that the health, safety, and environmental impact policies and goals of the company are being successfully implemented. The scope of responsibility extends to the company’s perimeter that can include the US, Canada, and Mexico, but also Central America, Europe, and Asia.  

Beyond compliance, the EHS Director develops and implements programs and processes that support Legrand’s corporate social responsibility (CSR) priorities related to the environment, health and safety, and the achievement of related, multi-year goals. 

What Will You Do?

• Provide strategic leadership and guidance to direct, engage and apply people, data, and budgetary resources to achieve an integrated and synergistic approach to environmental management, health and safety across the organization.
• Provide technical expertise, strategic leadership, and support for all of Legrand’s various facilities, departments, (including all acquisitions) on regulatory compliance issues related to environmental and health and safety activities.
• Act as the principal liaison between executive staff, divisional staffs, plant and warehouse management teams and human resources on matters relating to safety and health, and the environment.
• Lead the development and evaluation of Environmental, Health and Safety plans and standards, assess the feasibility of proposed options, and coordinate efforts to ensure successful program implementation.
• Lead the EH&S roadmap that defines the strategic plan 3 years into to the future.
• Manage the development and implementation of Environmental, Health and Safety metrics and provide direction and training for plant personnel to effectively report results.
• Provide coaching and training/development for team members to build our internal capabilities to ensure Environmental, Health and Safety program compliance.
• Chair the EH&S Steering Committee to gain buy-in and ownership for EH&S strategic objectives.
• Chair the EH&S Council to ensure effective site-level implementation of strategic objectives, communicate EH&S requirements to EH&S site leads, define site level reporting requirements to the council, and facilitate the sharing of best practices and resolution of identified issues.
• Serve as an agent of the company and representative/liaison to a variety of external entities pertinent to the duties of the position, including Federal, State, and Local Agencies, Customers, Suppliers, industry related groups, and various nonprofit, educational, government, and community entities.
• Stay current and continuously improve the program by leveraging continuous learning, staying abreast of relevant technologies and regulations, and identifying industry best practices through industry associations, vendor contacts, formal seminars, workshops, and peer group companies.
• Work with worldwide plant personnel to ensure Environmental, Health and Safety regulatory compliance and collaborate with Sustainability staff and cross-company teams to ensure we meet our corporate sustainability goals.
• Provide input and/or due diligence related the acquisition of new businesses.
• Complete other duties and projects as assigned.

Environmental management

• Responsible for driving the achievement of environmental objectives and deployment of supporting programs at all office, distribution centers and manufacturing in the LNCA perimeter.
• Ensure the creation and maintenance of management systems to ensure that eligible Legrand sites achieve and maintain ISO-14001 certification. Support the EH&S Manager in the creation or revision of contractual arrangements with 3rd party certification bodies.
• Determine the timing and scope of new site integration into the corporate EMS. Ensure that new sites determine roles and responsibilities for local EMS implementation, create and resource and implementation plan that meets corporate and Legrand Group requirements, and monitor the establishment and implementation of site EMS through attainment of initial certification.
• Ensure site level submission of environmental indicators to the Legrand Group is accurate and timely.
• Ensure internal audits are conducted on time and in accordance with EMS requirements and provide/coordinate the training of other qualified personnel to conduct audits
• Support the EH&S Manager to ensure timely follow-up and ensure corrective actions to any identified non-conformities or evidence of non-compliance with internal and external requirements.
  • Coordinate and assume a leadership role in the development of Legrand environmental policies, corporate objectives and related strategies and ensure all are reflected in the corporate and site level Environmental Management System.
  • Assist site personnel with short and long term environmental compliance planning and related process or programs
  • Monitor the improvement of environmental compliance and management initiatives; identify opportunities for continuous improvement
  • Support the Corporate Energy Manager (CEM) by providing required analysis, coordination of activities to identify improvement projects and keep the project pipeline full, assist carbon council members with project implementation and removal of barriers, and support engagement with external experts and consultants. Ensure operational and tactical requirements (energy analysis tool support, conduct of energy audits, planning and coordination of council meetings) related to carbon council activities are effectively maintained and act in a back-up role in the absence of an active CEM.

Required Skills

Experience:

• Minimum of 15 years related experience.
• International Experience in manufacturing environment preferred.
• Experience in behavior based safety programs and Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is a plus.

Education:

• Bachelor’s degree in EHS, Engineering, Industrial Management or related field.
• Master’s of Engineering, Safety, Environmental Science or related fields preferred.

Professional Accreditations:

• CSP
• CEM
• Certified ISO 14001, 45001 Auditor

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

• Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations including OSHA, Worker Compensation, and L & I, DOT, and EPA
• Demonstrated knowledge in environmental technology, and regulatory concepts and requirements, including:

• The EHS Director has two primary areas of responsibility commensurate with his/her expertise in, and general oversight and coordination of all EHS matters: 1) effective maintenance of the company’s environmental management system and 2) the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental health and safety program, which may include the achievement of certification to US or international health and safety standards. 

Health and Safety:

• Plan, develop and implement safety key concepts to provide the road map to zero injuries and world class performance in all functions and services of health and safety for all office, distribution centers and all the manufacturing locations in the company perimeter.
• Direct and control the safety and health function for organization to reduce safety rates, financial losses, and eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses.
• Determine the timing and scope of new site integration into the corporate OHS MS. Ensure that new sites determine roles and responsibilities for local OHS MS implementation, create and resource and implementation plan that meets corporate and Legrand Group requirements, and monitor the establishment and implementation of site OHS MS through attainment of initial certification.
• Ensure the creation and maintenance of management systems to ensure that eligible Legrand sites achieve and maintain ISO-45001 certification. Support the EH&S Manager in the creation or revision of contractual arrangements with 3^rd party certification bodies.
• Ensure that site level submission of health and safety indicators to the Legrand Group is properly validated and submitted in a timely manner.
• Ensure internal audits are conducted in accordance with OHS MS requirements and provide/coordinate the training of other qualified personnel to conduct audits
• Administer and monitor written, programs, policies, procedures, and trainings to meet or exceed government regulations, industry standards, and insurance companies’ requirements to enhance safety performance
• Collaborate with peers in the organization to provide global support to ensure compliance with all applicable health and safety, environmental, and workers compensation regulations while focusing on the improvement of key performance indicators.
• Responsible for internal audits for Safety & Health Programs
• Ensure regular conduct of safety meetings at each location in US and globally if applicable, participating virtually or personally as schedules dictate.
• Direct inspection of organization’s facilities to detect existing or potential accident hazards and determine corrective or preventive measures.
• Lead the investigation of accidents and reviews material and evidence prepared for organizations use in preventing future incidents, hearings, lawsuits, and insurance investigations.
• Work with the global and domestic EHS/HR Managers and Global Operations Managers, to conduct and/or participate in incident investigations, complete investigation reports and implement remedial actions
• Disseminate incident/accident related information and monitor incident/accident investigations, reports and verify corrective action is completed in a timely matter
• Oversee the reporting mechanisms for all the global injuries, workers’ compensation, serious incidents and environmental releases ensuring compatibility with company objectives.
• Ensure field location compliance with international, federal, state and local law enforcement regulatory agency.
• Understand the chemicals and any/all potential safety and environmental hazards used/present at all Legrand sites, take steps to reduce the use of problematic chemicals and to mitigate any potential safety and environmental health hazards.
