Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Design Engineer III to join the EWS (Wiremold) Team in West Hartford, CT. Responsible for the design of new products for the Wire and Cable Management business. The Design Engineer III works in a cross-functional team environment to develop products from concept to production, as well as perform design maintenance on existing product lines.  The Design Engineer III develops, evaluates, and validates product design, creates specification and documentation packages, preproduction builds, and transfers to production.

 

What Will You Do?

  • Performs product ideation and conceptualization to generate break through innovation. The innovation is driven by customer empathy gathered in conjunction with product management.
  • Lead design and development work on new and existing products for use in electromechanical products. This includes balancing design efforts among yourself and other engineers on the project.  Project team may include satellite facilities and the offshore design team. Efforts include reviewing, recommending, and appraising design work done by satellite facilities/vendors and the offshore design team.
  • Work with the Marketing Product Line Manager to develop the product specification. Gain consensus on design with marketing and manufacturing. Determine the appropriate codes and standards, testing requirements, end-user preferences and trends, and competitive product analysis.
  • Create sketches, 3D files, and prototype designs to provide different options to satisfy the product requirements and be used for customer feedback. Evaluate concepts to choose the best design for the business. Work with the offshore team to create final 3D models, assemblies, and drawings to refine, develop, and finalize the design.
  • Utilize principles of statics, dynamics, heat transfer, thermodynamics, etc. to optimize designs
  • Research, read, and understand competitive patents. Work with Patent Attorneys to avoid patent infringement. Protect the company’s intellectual property by obtaining patents.
  • Refine and complete the design through modeling, prototyping, testing, analysis, piloting, and inspection of processes and first articles. Work closely with Advanced Manufacturing, Tool Shops, and Manufacturing to procure prototypes and production product components.
  • Oversee the completion of product documentation to support production, including engineering drawings and specifications, bills of materials, and quality requirements and testing.
  • Investigation and analysis of new materials, components, technology, and engineering practices.
  • Work with listing agencies to conduct and develop standards testing as required.
  • Managing projects to rapid and effective completion including spanning departmental gaps.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education:   BS in Mechanical Engineering

Experience:  7-10 years' experience in design engineering, preferably developing plastic injection molded, cast aluminum, and sheet metal products. 

 

Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Must have sound technical knowledge and design skills.  Must be able to apply logical and scientific thinking principles to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering principles such as thermodynamics, heat transfer, beam theory, etc to product designs to maximize design efficiency
  • Demonstrated ability to understand market problems from customer empathy and generate product ideas for customer testing. 
  • Skills at performing voice of customer interviews and observations. 
  • Demonstrated creativity in the development of new product design concepts. Ability to create sketches, 3D files, and prototype designs to express different options that are used to satisfy the product requirements. 
  • Demonstrated experience with incorporating electrical wiring and PCBs into mechanical designs.
  • Understanding of UL Standards and the product listing process.
  • Must be able to incorporate eco-design principals into new product development, as well as identify ways to improve environmental impact of existing products.
  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and the ability to effectively handle multiple priorities.
  • Must have strong analytical skills and proven ability to efficiently research and summarize information effectively and make recommendations based upon analysis.   
  • Must be highly collaborative and able to work in a team-based environment. Fosters open communication and support an environment of innovation and creative change. 
  • Strong computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation, and database software; e-mail, Microsoft Teams, and meeting management software.  Ability to use the internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively.  Proficient in the use of 3D CAD software, SolidWorks preferred.
  • Must possess excellent project management skills, including the demonstrated ability to develop and manage a project plan, establish priorities, work to deadlines, and control several projects at various stages of work. Must understand the implications of product costing to ensure business goals are met. 
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly acclimate to existing product lines.
